An ultrasound is just as important as taking a pregnancy test and can alert you to possible pregnancy complications. Once you receive a positive pregnancy test, get an ultrasound at our center today to protect your health and get the clarity you need about what’s next for you.
Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?
Before diving into what to expect during your first ultrasound appointment, it’s important to know why an ultrasound is needed in the first place. Ultrasounds confirm three vital pregnancy details for every woman, including:
- Viability (whether there is a heartbeat & pregnancy is progressing)
- Pregnancy location (whether it’s located within the uterus or not)
- How far along you are (also known as gestational age)
All of these details are necessary for safeguarding your health and confirming what pregnancy options are safe for you.
What to Expect During Your Ultrasound
The type of ultrasound you will have to do depends on how far along you are, and it may be a transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound.
Transvaginal ultrasounds are used earlier in pregnancy because they offer a clearer picture of the pregnancy. During a transvaginal ultrasound, the nurse will gently insert the ultrasound transducer (the wandlike part of the ultrasound machine) into your vagina—this may cause slight pressure as the nurse moves the wand to gain a picture of your pregnancy.
For later in pregnancy, abdominal ultrasounds are done. These include a nurse applying a gel-like substance onto your abdomen and moving the transducer around. You can see your pregnancy on the ultrasound screen during both types of ultrasound.
