Certain side effects are expected after an abortion. However, an infection has a different set of warning signs, and knowing what to watch for can help you recognize when you need medical attention.

Keep reading to learn what warning signs to look for if you suspect an infection is present.
A Fever That Sticks Around
Misoprostol, the second drug used in a medical abortion, can cause a temporary fever or chills.
A fever that continues rather than resolving warrants a call to your healthcare provider. Cleveland Clinic lists a fever lasting more than 24 to 48 hours among the signs of possible infection after a medical abortion.
If you’ve had a surgical abortion procedure, a fever could also indicate that a complication like an infection is occurring.
Tell your provider how high your temperature has been, how long the fever has lasted, and whether you have other symptoms.
Pain That Is Getting Worse
Abdominal cramping will occur during a medical abortion and may also be present after a surgical abortion.
Pain that becomes severe or continues to get worse can signal that something serious is going on.
Severe abdominal or back pain should be reported to a healthcare professional, particularly when it occurs along with fever, weakness, unusual discharge, or feeling increasingly ill.
An Unusual Vaginal Odor
Changes in bleeding can be expected after an abortion, but vaginal discharge with an unpleasant or strong odor can be a sign of infection.
Don’t try to diagnose the cause at home. Contact the provider who performed or prescribed the abortion, your regular healthcare provider, or another medical professional who can evaluate your symptoms.
Heavy Bleeding Needs Attention, Too
Heavy bleeding is not necessarily caused by infection, but it can indicate another complication and shouldn’t be ignored.
If you are bleeding heavily, becoming dizzy or faint, experiencing severe pain, or feel that something is seriously wrong, seek prompt medical attention. Follow any emergency instructions your provider gave you as well.
