What Is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill involves two drugs taken in sequence during early pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone is taken first. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary to sustain a pregnancy. Misoprostol is taken later, typically 24 to 48 hours after the first drug, and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through cramping and vaginal bleeding.

This method is FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks of gestation. After that point, the likelihood of complications such as heavy bleeding, infection, or incomplete abortion increases. Because timing, dosage, and individual health factors all play a role, medical screening is essential before taking these drugs.

Risks of Ordering the Abortion Pill Online

While abortion pills may be advertised online, buying them without medical oversight carries important risks. The FDA warns against buying abortion pills online or from overseas sources because doing so may bypass safety measures intended to protect your health.

Some concerns include:

  • Unregulated or unknown drugs: Pills sold online may vary in quality, dosage, or ingredients.
  • No medical screening: Without an ultrasound, there’s no way to confirm gestational age, assess viability and rule out miscarriage, or understand the location of the pregnancy to detect an ectopic pregnancy.*
  • Lack of follow-up care: Complications such as heavy bleeding, infection, or incomplete abortion may go unnoticed without medical support.

*An ectopic pregnancy, when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, cannot be treated with abortion pills and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed early.
