Understanding the Abortion Pill Process

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, consists of a two-drug regimen. The first drug is called mifepristone and works by blocking progesterone, a hormone needed to support pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy tissue through bleeding and cramping.

Medical abortion is approved by the FDA through 10 weeks of gestation. Because of this, getting an ultrasound and knowing how far along you are in your pregnancy is important before considering this option.

Common side effects of the abortion pill include cramping and bleeding, as well as fever and nausea.

When the Abortion Pill May Not Be Considered an Option

The abortion pill may not be suitable for you if any of the following situations apply:

  • You have been pregnant for longer than 70 days.
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD).
  • You have an ectopic pregnancy.
  • You have certain medical conditions, such as anemia or bleeding disorders.
  • You are taking blood thinners.
  • You have an allergy to the medicine used.

You should also be aware of the potential risks that come with the abortion pill, which include incomplete abortion, prolonged bleeding, and infection.

Why an Ultrasound Comes First

Prioritize your health by getting an ultrasound before taking the abortion pill, since an ultrasound can confirm the location of the pregnancy, how far along you are, and the viability of the pregnancy. All these details of your health history can affect whether the abortion pill is considered appropriate for you. While an ultrasound isn’t required to determine eligibility, it’s a good idea to get all the facts first for your safety and peace of mind.

At Life Choices Family Resource Center, we offer no-cost pregnancy testing and ultrasounds, allowing you to better understand your pregnancy and the options available to you.
