What's the Difference Between STI and STD?

STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are a bit different. People often use STD and STI interchangeably, but testing aims to prevent and treat infections before they develop into diseases.

An STI is a virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite people can get through sexual contact. STIs often don’t have any symptoms, so it’s important to get tested regularly. An STD (sexually transmitted disease) is caused by an STI, where an infection has led to a disease symptom.

Chlamydia & Gonorrhea

Here is more information about two common bacterial STDs. We offer no-cost STD testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea at Life Choices Family Resource Center.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STD in the nation. This bacterial STD is easily identified with STD testing and can be effectively treated with antibiotics. Possible symptoms of Chlamydia include:

  • An abnormal discharge
  • A burning sensation when peeing
  • Pain and swelling in one or both testicles (for men)

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial STD that can typically be treated with antibiotics. With Gonorrhea, the bacteria has already started developing resistance to treatment drugs, so treatment will require many follow-up appointments to make sure it’s gone.

Gonorrhea doesn’t usually come with any symptoms, but some may experience the following symptoms:

  • Painful or burning sensation when peeing
  • Abnormal discharge
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods (for women)
  • Painful or swollen testicles (for men)

No-Cost STD Testing

Preventative care is important to safeguard your health. Get tested right away if you think you may have any chance of having an STD. Gonorrhea can cause permanent damage and lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
