The Types of Abortion

There are two types of abortion: medication and surgical abortion. Both work in different ways to terminate an existing pregnancy. Different abortion methods are used during different stages of pregnancy.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is also known as “the abortion pill” using two types of drugs to end a pregnancy. Mifepristone works to prevent the embryo from growing or implanting, while Misoprostol works to contract and expel the pregnancy.  It’s vital to know that medication abortion is only for women up to 10 weeks pregnant.

Common risks of medication abortion include:

  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Incomplete abortion (may require surgical abortion)
  • Heavy/prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion is more invasive, as anesthesia is normally used and instruments used to remove the pregnancy through the vagina. There are multiple surgical procedures including aspiration abortion and dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion.

Common risks of surgical abortion include:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Infection

Verify Your Pregnancy

To know what type of abortion you qualify for, you will need to know how far along you are and confirm the details of your pregnancy. An ultrasound confirms viability, location of the pregnancy, and gestational age. It also alerts you to any pregnancy complications. Schedule a no-cost and confidential pregnancy test and ultrasound appointment with us today.

If you need a non-judgmental place to process, talk to us today. Our staff is here to listen and help you process your choice.
